Relapse Prevention
The DFCC is a recipient of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG) through the State of Indiana. Goals of this grant include reducing cocaine use among youth and young adults; and cocaine relapse prevention. The SPF-SIG process includes five steps: Needs Assessment, Capacity Building, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation, as well as a focus on sustainability and cultural competence.
A major component of this grant is the creation of a RPR (Relapse Prevention for Reentry) curriculum to be implemented within the St. Joseph County Reentry Center. This curriculum is a progressive educational series addressing the relapse and prevention needs of chemically dependent criminal offenders who are in the process of returning to the community from incarceration. The primary aim of this series is to reduce the occurrences of relapse (both behavioral and chemical) that fuel the rate of re-incarceration (recidivism). Over the course of this series the offender participants will be challenged to move from an assumed anti-social and dysfunctional lifestyle to an increasingly pro-social and functional way of life.
The curriculum consists of 12 sessions:
- Introductions, Origin of the Class
- Building a Foundation for Re-Entry and the Challenges that are Ahead
- Addiction(s) Defined
- Criminogenic Risk Factors and The Motivation to Change
- Recovery, Relapse, and Recidivism Defined
- Relationships: Family, Friends and Foes
- Restorative Justice, Empathy and The Harm Done
- Planning and Goal Setting
- Aristotle’s “Good Life” Model
- Developing Capital
- Happiness and Gratitude
- Celebration and Graduation
